The Record of Light

"Through a picture, daily life is revealed, and it becomes a picture," a photographer, Choi Kwang Ho said. Like this, people can see other people's lives with a picture. First photograph is called "Life-Giving Water" by Piestrasik in India. The other is called "Journey for Water" by Kim Jung Man in Africa. In both photographs, they deal with a subject of same message, the importance of water. However, they show some differences.

In the Piestrasik photograph, the main center of interest is a boy. He lifts a bucket above his head and pours water. His head and body are wet, and water flows on his face and body. It makes this photograph dynamic. The boy also closes his eyes and opens his mouth a little. From the expression on his face, people can realize that he is happy and cool because of water. The periphery is dark, but the whole atmosphere of photograph is bright due to his expression which the photographer especially focuses on.

In the Kim Jung Man photograph, the main center of interest is 6 women. Almost all of them set a water jar on the head. They also carry an umbrella in one hand. Their hair and clothing styles can enable people to guess that they are a tribe of traditional African people. In the background, there are green trees and blue sky. Because the sun may be blazing, the light is shining overall on the photograph.

Both photographs depict people, and for them water is very precious. The "Life-Giving Water" is made up of only one boy who pours water on his body. Also, the viewer can see a figure, including his expression. In contrast, the other includes 6 women who go to a well, which is far away from their tribe, to draw water, and the viewer cannot see their face. Therefore, the viewer can think that water is more important to him than women because the viewer can concentrate on one person and expression although "Life-Giving Water" is dark overall compare with the other.

Even though two photographs are completely different, they convey same message that water is important in life. Thus, through photographs, the photographers may express worldwide issue to inform people how serious it is. Then people can know more about it, so the power of a photograph is getting bigger than simply seeing it.

    The Record of Light

“Through a picture, daily life is revealed, and it becomes a picture,” a photographer, Choi Kwang Ho, said. Like this, people can see other people’s lives with a picture. First photograph is called “Life-Giving Water” by Piestrasik in India. The other is called “Journey for Water” by Kim Jung Man in Africa. In both photographs, they deal with same message, the importance of water. However, they show some different mood.

In the Piestrasik photograph, the main center of interest is a boy. He lifts a bucket above his head and pours water. Water flows on his face and body, so his head and body are wet. Because of flowing water, this photograph seems to be dynamic.

Also, from the back, women look like the Amazons. In the background, there are green trees and blue sky. Because the sun may be blazing, the light is shining overall on the photograph.

Both photographs depict people, and for them water is very precious. The “Life-Giving Water” is made up of only one boy who pours water on his body. Also, the viewer can see his expression. In contrast, the other includes 6 women who go to a well, which is far away from their tribe, to draw water, and the viewer cannot see their face. Therefore, the viewer may think that water is more important to him than women because “Life-Giving Water” emphasizes the boy’s expression.

Even though two photographs are completely different, they convey same message that water is important in life. Through photographs, the photographers may express worldwide issue to inform people how serious it is. Then people can know more about it, so the power of a photograph is getting bigger than simply seeing it.
