Yoon JinSoo p58, five paragraphs essay

Unpredictable, Powerful, Horrible disaster.

"A swarm of snakes! I don't know how many…. There is too many!!"

This was a notified call in China. Many people call the 911 because of a sudden

appeared herd of snakes. Scientists and media gave attention to this phenomenon,

Chinese were afraid  about this bode ill. They worried about the Baekdu mountain.

Actually, there were few signs of eruption. Many scientists concerned about eruption

of the Baekdu mountain could be horrible disaster. Like this, active of a volcano can

cause huge damages. Then, what is the cause of volcano eruption and what kind of

damages can be exist?

First, we have to know about cause of volcano eruption. Inside of the earth is

very hot. The mantle, just below the crust of the earth, can melt irons and rock.

Temperature of the mantle is over 1000 degrees. Volcano is erupted by this hot

mantle. Mantle makes 'Lava' by melting some rocks and part of crust. Lava

contains lots of gas so it is lighter than crust and has property of rise. For this

reason, lava melts crust and climbs up steady. Finally, when lava comes up a lot

and crust is not enough to bear pressure, land splits and volcano erupts. This is

a volcano eruption

During these phenomenons happen, some signs are appeared. First thing

is earthquake. Moving of lava cause frequent earthquakes. Earthquakes occur

more often by lava moves closer with surface of crust, so it cause second sign

of eruption, rockslide. Then, land billows and temperature of surface comes up.

Usually many plants and animals die and lots of steam is appeared because of

heat. Last, when eruption approaches, water at the top of volcano is boiled

and volcanic gas is spurted out.

After erupting, people have to be carful about somethings. They are magma,

volcanic gas and pyroclastic materials. Volcanic gas will attack first. It contains

some bad substances like carbon dioxide, sulfur. So it can suffocate many

people. Volcanic gas also contains lots of steam and causes heavy rain. Next

things are pyroclastic materials. These are burning rocks and stones that poped

up by high pressure. Speed of these is over 300km/h and temperature is about

700 degree. People can get burn though they stay away from these and some

of these explode when they fall down. Last thing is magma. Magma is hot liquid

so it burns everything by flowing on land.

Many people are worrying about destructive force of volcano eruption.

Besides, many scientists predict that scale of eruption Baekdu mountain will be

over 10 times in Island volcano eruption. Of course, we can't estimate time and

scale of eruption exactly, but some signs are observed. So we have to take our

eyes on it and prepare for unpredictable happens.

A process essay about the stages of a holiday (First draft)

How can we meet our precious family members, who already passed away? It is the very family memorial service. Every year, on that day when they had died, the family and close relatives meet together. And we talk about the dead, seeing old family album or eating food they loved. Sharing memories about them, we meet them again. Family memorial service, hardly disappearing to date, is one of the most important family events.

In the past, ancestral rites were very influenced by Confucian culture and followed the normal procedure. Ancestral rites at home only were conducted only for close family ancestors such as from a father to a grandfather of a grandfather. From three days before the rite date, the master of rite had to be prudent in his conduct and didn't visit neighbors having something unpleasant. Meanwhile, the rites for distant ancestors, which are called seasonal rites, were held at the family gravesite in October of the lunar calendar. The modernization of society, however, was signaling many changes in family memorial service.

Nowadays, ancestral rites become more informal and various according to the religion or customs of family. Also, people hold a service just for very close family ancestors. How about my family's memorial service? It is for my father-in-law and grandparents-in-law, and conducted at my house which the master of rite lives in. On the day of rite, family and close relatives come together as early as possible. And then women make food for rites and men clean the house. The service begins round about 10 at night. Usually men light incense and offer wine before the rites table, and then all members make a deep bow. After the service, people eat food on the table and go back home.

In all ages, what matters in the rites is content, not form. As it were, sincere mind not procedure. Family memorial service, as it were, makes us remember the dead and reminds us of our root. Also, preparing the family event together, people can understand better each other. Furthermore, they can let out unpleasant feelings among themselves. In the other hand, children meet close family ancestors, who they have never met, through old photos and stories about the dead. This exiting experience makes children realize the value of blood line.

At present, family memorial service is much simpler and more various than past. At all cases, however, the most crucial thing is mind. Maybe modern people, especially youths, could like holidays such as valentine day, Christmas, or Children's day etc. rather than family memorial service. But most of all, we could realize and keep our identity through the rites which remember our family ancestors. That is why family memorial service is meaningful and valuable in our lives.

Hope for Hitachi, Hope for Japan

"Love is like flowers which bloom in spring"

This is the first line of a poem written by G.Flaubert who was a French novelist. For many people, spring holds hopeful meanings such as love and a new beginning. If you want to feel the sense of happiness that spring can bring, why don't you travel to Hitachi? In Hitachi, you can enjoy a festival called Hitachi Sakura Matsuri, which means cherry tree festival.

Hitachi Sakura Matsuri has been held in every April for 50 years. All over town, about 14,000 cherry trees are in full bloom, and it seems that cherry blossoms cover the whole town over. Few weeks before the festival, people hang colorful lamps, which are cylindrical in shape, along the streets. Also, some residents who are participating in various local clubs prepare to show performances in the festival. For example, Hamaren, which is a club related Japanese traditional drumming, has participated in this cherry tree festival since it made.

In the morning during the festival, some small events are held. Children put on a lion or bear mask and perform a dance with a music, which is played by Japanese traditional instrument called Sasara. As for adults, the Hitachi Dance Festival takes place. As time goes by, more people converged on the festival.

The most important event starts in the afternoon. Hitachi Furyumono is a puppet show which is about battle stories in 14th to 16th centuries. Funny fairy tales or local legends are played as well. It is performed onstage on a huge float. The float imitates a castle of five layers and is luxuriously decorated. In 2009, Hitachi Furyumono was registered as UNESCO intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

From 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., the time for Sakura Light-up begins. Many lamps that people hung before festival are lit. Before going back home, people lastly walks Heiwa Dori, the main avenue of cherry trees, to enjoy the bright light of lamps and the color of cherry blossoms, which are mingling together in the fresh night air.

Every year many tourist visit Hitachi in the spring for Hitachi Sakura Festival. Unfortunately, this year may be the first exception because of Japan earthquake and tsunami. The number of its casualties has increased every day. However, people say, after winter, must come spring. Japan must overcome this disaster, and will be more pleased than ever.

March 25th.

A boy having chosen asceticism

A boy was born in April 8th, BC543 by the lunar calender. His father was a king of ancient kingdom in Kapilavastu of Nepal. He was a part of the royal family but, in 29 years old, chose to leave his home and all other things to realize the truth. He once practiced asceticism but realize it's not right way for attaining enlightenment. He found a new way and eventually reached the state of nirvana. He is the Buddha.

Many Buddhists regard the Buddha's Birthday as the most important festival. They designate April 8th (by the lunar calender) as a holiday to commemorate the day, enlightenment and his death. And they show their dedication by visiting a Buddhist temple, praying with their utmost sincerity throughout the day.

I'm not Buddhist but, on the day, go to a temple to worship with my parents, Buddhists. Most temples prepare the biggest event with exerting themselves to the utmost. For example, monks hang out colorful lanterns and festoon streets as well as every temple. The lanterns' design is a lotus. A lotus and candle represent the blossoming of wisdom and enlightenment. Its beauty is second to no other ceremony.

One of the my favorite events is that they serve many Buddhist and other guests as a delicious traditional meal, steamed rice cake garnished with black adzuki beans, and all kind of vegetables. Frankly speaking, many non-believers including me go to a temple, in the day, to eat them free of charge.

Although I'm not a Buddhist, I look forward to the holiday. Extraordinary, spectacular but serene sights make me peaceful and touched. Besides, it provides an opportunity for not only Buddhists but also non-believers to think the Buddha and nirvana.

Cry for freedom

Yoon JinSoo

March 1st in 1919, old and wood-made door opened. A man's head came out.

He looked around carefully. The door of another house opened and a boy ran out.

The boy stared at the man and smiled. The man nodded with determined attitude.

Finally the man came out from his house completely and headed to main street.

Many people followed him. In that day, country was filled with crowd's voice.

"Hurrah for Korea independence". People screamed that sentence again and

again. March 1st is independence movement day of Korea. Many people died

while they were demonstrating for independence. So we commemorate that

day every year to remember them.

In march 1st, we always display our national flag, Taegukki. Actually, we

hoist our national flag in special form in sad days. Independence movement

day looks like sad holiday, but we don't raise our national flag in special form.

Because we are proud of our ancestor's brave. Of course we cherish the

memory of our ancestors but also we celebrate our independence and thank

to our ancestors. So we hoist Taegukki in normal form at early morning.

Second, we prepare ancestral rites table for dead' spirits. There are

several rules for setting tables. First thing is about fruits. On middle of first

row, people usually put red fruits on the east side, white fruits on the west

side. Next, between fruits, people set up some jujubes, chestnuts, pears

and dried persimmons. Second, fish jerkies, herbs, soy sauce and rice

drink are set up on second row. Dry foods(Fish jerkies) must be displayed

to west side, and wet foods must be at east. There are several more

regulations that we have to observe, but that's too many to write.

They are kind of traditional rules that are succeeded from past. People

believe that if they observe rules well, spirits will be comfortable.

Last, people pray for their ancestors. Most of people make a deep

bow in front of ancestor's grave, but at the large ceremony, many priests

and monks come and progress their own rituals. In that day, they pray

and bow in front of the monument without enmity. President of korea

usually attend ceremony. All of people became together by proud

and respect.

In fact, independence movement in march 1st, 1919 didn't change

Japan's ruling powers. Japan ignored and suppressed us continuosly.

Even Japan's police are not attacked by us. People just screamed and

shouted. But it change many things. People got brave heart, and hope.

Many intellectuals started to fight with Japan and this movements are

spread over. Korean couldn't forget that day because we are

Jang Jun Hwa, Early instruction on foreign language

Early foreign language education First draft

Are You Not Having a Hard Time Learning Foreign Languages?

             270. Do you know what this number stands for? It stands for the number of kindergartens in Korea where English education is a top priority. Roughly 270 kindergartens teach English "legally" What if the number of preschools, which are not actually allowed to mainly teach English, is counted? It must be increasing dramatically. Also, there are many kindergartens to put emphasis on teaching foreign languages such as Chinese and Japanese. I think the reason why more parents send their children to the language-centered preschools is obvious. Because it works! It has several advantages to teach preschoolers foreign languages.

When babies who are under 5 acquire their native language, their right brain is used. It is not learning. They simply remember what to hear without knowing the meaning. Still, they will soon speak and understand their first language. It is related to a child's innate linguistic ability. Likewise, when acquiring second languages, babies use their right brain as well. It means that babies do not need an effort to know them. On the other hand, children above the age of 5 use the left brain to "learn" the languages. It will take more time and efforts learning foreign languages than mother tongue.

Some people think that foreign language may interfere with learning native languages. However, in 2009, the study at Brussels Free Universities (ULB) in Belgium proved that it does not. The research team reported that the children, who are exposed to multilingual environment, are more likely to acquire the first and foreign languages effectively, than children exposed to one language.

Early instruction on foreign languages has several merits in terms of language acquisition and a synergy effect for languages. Language is merely the vehicle to achieve what people want. Therefore, in the age of globalization, multilingual people can easily fulfill their dreams. We should give this opportunity to children. Teaching children foreign language is necessary. The point is how we teach, not whether we teach.

Literacy autobiography First draft

The Story in my Old Drawer

I have an old dusty wooden drawer. It is so tight to shut that I rarely try to open it. But there is one more reason why I hesitate to do it. Once my drawer spit what it has, I usually spend all day checking everything in the drawer. I have kept my old diaries, a lot of photo and some accessories in it, which remind me of my childhood and adolescence. Especially, when skimming through my 10-year notebooks, I feel like I know how to learn writing and reading both in my native language, Korean, and English.

The first magazine that I read was made by my older brother. He used to buy several notes, and tear off their front cover to make his own cover of magazine. His magazine usually consisted of several sections such as comics and quizzes. Turning over some pages, I could find short stories which were written or copied down by him. Most importantly, there was even opinion section where I could write how to feel after reading all sections. It was one of the first steps for me to read and write Korean.

My mother never says, "Why don't you study?" but rather "Let's go to the library." As I was very used to going there, a library was where I felt at home. One day, I skipped school without reasons and went to the library. It was school hours, so few people come and go quietly. I picked out a book within the range of my hand and tiptoed over to the corner. The book was named 'We are Korean wheel lily', which is about three children head of household to deal with life's challenges. To be honest, I do not remember the exact story of it. The only thing in my mind is that I was so moved to tears that I wrote a book report. With the book report, I got the first prize in the speech contest. Since then, I am not reluctant to reading and writing. I can say that at that time I read countless books and wrote my impression on them.

After I became a high school student, as you know, it has little time reading and writing except the language part of the university entrance examination. Instead, the club activity helped me keep my literary interest. I was a member of the broadcasting club at school, so I wrote a two-page-long script every other day. The time to introduce brief plot of a variety of books caught students' attention. For this reason, I had to spare a lot of time reading many books. Also, writing a script in our club's format became as simple as pie.

Developing reading and writing in English is slightly different to how to learn in Korean. There was no dramatic opportunity to enjoy reading and writing in English. The first step was even hard. I started to learn English when I was 12. One day, my teacher walked in the classroom with an unfamiliar woman. She is as tall as an oak tree with blue eye. She was the first foreigner I have ever met. At the first class with her, she asked students to write alphabet. However, I did not know not only how to write alphabet, but also what alphabet is. Finally, I stayed at school till late with her and had to practice writing alphabet. Unfortunately, it means that I could not begin on the right foot.

When it comes to reading and writing in English, who had an influence on me was my father. He realized that I was one of students who had never studied English. He bought a set of the animated Disney films from Japan. It was composed with videos, scripts and cartoons. Everyday at 9 p.m., I and my father took turns to read scripts loudly. If I collect all books which I read at that time, the number of books is as twice as I recently read.

Now, my major is English interpretation and translation. In almost every class, professors give me reading materials, and I have to take them in. Reading-based work occupies over half of my study hours. Meanwhile, I know that one of my weak points, but my favorite in English is writing. Therefore, I have always taken writing class since I became a student in HUFS.

I have had a lot of chance to read and write in Korean including magazines that my older brother made, impressive books and club activities, which are sort of external influences. On the other hand, the beginning of reading and writing in English was a bad dream. Yet, the reason I keep writing and reading in English is that I start to like it without other influences, just by myself.

Hwang Yoo Jung - Foreign language instruction should begin in kindergarten

The Sooner The Better

Hwang Yoo Jung  200904349

March 19th

Nowadays English is being taught at almost all places where young children play and study, and educators are racking their brains finding better teaching ways. Indeed, the whole country seems to be in the grip of English fever. Something is wrong and something is right. Though, on the whole I agree with early English education, especially in a kindergarten.

First, according to the theory of a world linguist, humans, born with language Acquisition Device, can acquire language easily by this device. But this device usually regresses at puberty, so, for instance, teenagers, immigrating to another country, often have difficulty learning language. That's why I think the sooner the better in terms of learning foreign languages. Secondly, English could be a kind of play in the kindergarten. That is, young children learn English while singing, dancing, playing games or doing something exciting. They can learn English never feeling pressured learning, which is why English instruction should begin at least in infancy. Finally, young children can understand the world better through foreign languages, especially through a global language like English. For a long time, cultural heritage has been delivered and accumulated by means of language. Then, kindergarteners, learning foreign languages, come to know well various societies, customs, thoughts, arts and so on around the world.

As a result, in my opinion, early English education is very desirable in that the younger learners are, the better they can acquire language; kindergarteners can learn through play; and foreign languages are effective means through which young children meet the world. If early language education does have great advantages like this, why should we halt between two opinions?

The Earlier, the Better

The world is getting smaller and smaller, and now learning foreign languages is a necessary "must do" in this global world. Especially, it is crazy not to learn English and I don't even have to mention its importance and advantages as everybody knows very well about that. Then, I want to ask a question which has been a controversy since long time ago. When is the best time to start? The earlier, the better? Well, as far as I am concerned, yes!! There are three main reasons why I think so.

First of all, the earlier you start to learn a foreign language, the faster and more easily you get familiar with it. It is said that the part of the brain which controls the language system is much more flexible when young. In other words, once you get completely used to your mother tongue, it is quite difficult to naturally acquire another language, because there are so many differences between two languages such as structures, word orders and pronunciation etc.

Secondly, if you begin learning a foreign language early, you can have no fear when speaking the language. For instance, when you look at kids learning English from their kindergarten, they speak with foreign teachers so naturally without any hesitation or feeling ashame even if their English is very poor or doesn't make sense at all. This kind of process is really good practice and it affects a lot when they are grown up. I have many friends who are really good at English reading and writing but cannot say a word in English and this is because we started to learn English when we were thirteen.

In addition, early exposure to a foreign language usually make kids keep interested in that language. As not only the eye-catching pictures and various visual materials used but also many exciting activities and games are done for teaching foreign languages to young children, they think it enjoyable and amusing instead of thinking it as a boring subject. This pleasant image about learning another language helps them not to lose interest later on.

Therefore, if learning foreign language is necessary, it is good idea to make your children start early. They will learn fast and easily, and have no fear for meeting foreigners as well as they will find another language really amusing and interesting.

You cannot have your cake and eat it

Suddenly, foreign language instruction, especially in English, has been socially a growing trend among the Korean parents, so they send their children to study abroad or to the kindergarten where teachers teach English. However, there are several problems in the early-childhood English education. First of all, children's identities are not established yet. Children do not know Korean and who they are even, so they first have to know Korean and Korean culture. If they start to learn English in kindergarten, they can be confused between two cultures. In Korea, as a Korean, they use Korean in their daily lives, so they are not accustomed to English which is based on the western culture. Also, children can suffer from the heavy pressure. Teachers can give them some homework such as memorizing English words, but most of the students are under a lot of stress when they do their assignments, and so do children. Comparing with other children, they think they have to do well. Then, because of this stress, they can have a physical or mental disability. In addition, children did not decide to study English. Children should experience in various areas in order to find their dreams. There is more to life than just English. They should have a variety of experiences particularly in the field of music, art and physical education as a child, but their parents just force English on them. In conclusion, because of childhood English education, children can be confused about their identities and burden themselves with English. Also, they should make their own decisions about their dreams. Therefore, English instruction should not begin in kindergarten.

But, Excessive studying in childhood will be harmful for children.

The world's suggestion is rapidly changing from individual academic

ability to creative and passion. Companies are changing their job

interview form and everyone knows that most of successful men of this

time, didn't graduate college. Then, how about twenty or thirty years

later future? It might be very different from now. However, forced

education to children can dry off creative and passion completely.

Many children lost their time for do some interesting things to forced

education. They are always under the stress and it could be harmful

for children. Stop teaching same as others and let them to doing

something interesting would be helpful.

If parents want to their children success, they should play with

their children and reading books to their children. These activities

can raise children's creative. When they find their aptitude and get

interested in it, they would be very passionate people. So just stop

teaching 'Useful' knowledge(kind of English) to young children.

Teach them about funny playing and make them to discover their

March 16th.

My Child's English? English of My Neighbor's Child?

Nowadays, we can watch how many controversies broadcasts have reported about an so called English Kindergarten or elementary schools' English education system. These already became serious and social problems. I'm not a kid. I'm not kids' mother. I don't work at an kindergarten which teaches in English. But this issue makes me think deeply about it.

I did not receive my early education. So I don't know how much effect those foreign language institutions have on kids' ability. And I'm really wondering whether explanations of English kindergartens is true or impractical. But the most confused people are most Korean moms. They plunge into confusion and should choose to put their children into early English institutions. Although they don't know whether those education are useful or not, everyone who raises kids has aspirations for their children to receive better education.

Everybody has a variety of opinions about when foreign language instruction should begin. But nobody knows whether it is useful, whether a lot of gossip of its effect are real, and whether it is necessary for my child to attend it. The question must remain to be seen.
