Park Jin-Kyung Five paragraph argumentative essay

200904082 Park Jin-Kyung

Free Music

Free Music is killing musician ship

Let me tell you this

We free falling darling

We eat by selling, make livin' by selling

This is a part of a song sung by a famous Korean hip-hop artist Cho PD, "Free Music". He wrote this song in 2007 to raise awareness about irresponsible act of downloading free music. As it says, it is not right and should be banned to download music off the internet and share with others.

Free music does kill the musicians. It costs only 600won to download one song from the online music services and about 10 percent of its profit goes to artists including composers and lyric writers. Though it is really cheap compared to buying a CD, there are still people who try to get music for free illegally and this situation leads musician not to make enough profit to continue to survive in the music industry.

Some people say "Those songs are crap. That's why I just get it for free, I mean, they are not worth paying." However, it is they that make those songs crap because the musicians have to make an album with a low budget and thus, sometimes they can't afford to make songs with good quality. And for the same reason, Korean pop music is full of Idol music and there is no diversity at all. That's because music industry put money only on the music which can be profitable.

It is said that if we reduce only 10 percent of the illegal downloading, it can create more than 80 thousand new jobs. And if lots of new jobs in this field are made, music business will be activated and this will make Korean music have broad variety of genre and be rich in quality as well. As a result, we can enjoy many different and high quality music.

Korea is a top ranked country in the world as subscribing to an online music services but there are still those who insist on free music. This irresponsible behavior destroys music industry but also our entire art culture. We must stop this right now.

  1. 1. Hook of this essay is very interesting. Using a song was good idea!

2.Main point is we have to stop free downloading

3.4th paragraph is very strong. The quote of research made seriousness of this problem very close and realistic

4.I think in the last paragraph, wiriting some bad points of free musics again would be better. Not just about 'free downloading is bad'

  2. 1. Your main point seemed that downloading and sharing music off the Internet should be banned.

    2. I like your hook which interestes me and words are clear.
Also, I think some specific figures that you gave is a good way to strengthen your opinion.

    3. I hope that you reveal the source of the first sentence in the last body paragraph.

    4. I think more explanation are needed to connect smoothly between two sentences.

'sometimes they can't afford to make songs with good quality.' & 'And for the same reason, Korean pop music is full of Idol music and there is no diversity at all.'

  4. Korea is a top ranked country in the world as subscribing to an online music services but there are still those who insist on free music. Free downloading takes jobs from people involved in the music industry as well as the musicians and makes Korean music overly weighted toward a certain genre. This irresponsible behavior destroys not only music industry but also our entire art culture. We must stop this right now.

  5. Some people say "Those songs are crap. That's why I just get it for free, I mean, they are not worth paying." However, it is they that make those songs crap because the musicians have to make an album with a low budget and thus, sometimes they can't afford to make songs of a good quality. And this trend causes Korean music to have no diversity and be just full of commercial pop music. That's because music industry puts money only on the music which can be profitable.
In addition, free music removes many opportunities related to the general music business. It is said that if we reduce only 10 percent of the illegal downloading, it can create more than 80 thousand new jobs. And if lots of new jobs in this field are made, music business will be activated and this will make Korean music have broad variety of genre and be rich in quality as well.
