Our Feet, the Transportation

In the past, people had to walk, ride a horse, or ride in a carriage to go somewhere. However, today, as the technology develops rapidly, there have been also many changes in the transportation sector. If people have the time and a car, they can easily go everywhere, or they may use public transportation such as a bus, train, ship, and an airplane. As for me, after I came up to Seoul in March to take courses in Hankuk University of Foreign Studies as an exchange student, I use these things more than before to go to my house in Ulsan. To go there, people can usually use a bus, train, or an airplane, and each of them has some advantages.

First of all, to go to Ulsan, bus is the most frequently used. Not only it is the cheaper than any other transportation, but also people can watch TV or use Internet while the bus is moving. In addition, unlike the ordinary buses, this bus never stops to its destination, except go to the rest area for a while. Also, there is lots of legroom in this bus, so people can go comfortably by stretching out their legs.

A train is the second most used transportation to go there. Because of the development of technology, Korea has now a high-speed railway, KTX, throughout the country, and it was also opened in Ulsan last year. Now it takes just about 2 hours from Seoul to Ulsan by KTX because it is over 200km. It can accommodate a number of people and reduce carbon emissions. It is also cheaper than an airplane and faster than a bus. Therefore, the number of people who use it is gradually increasing, and I also use KTX a lot.

Finally, people get on an airplane. It is the fastest transportation, so they can go to Ulsan in just thirty minutes. Because they can reduce the time, they prefer to take an airplane. It also offers people the better services compared to others. For example, a snack is served onboard. In addition, they can fly in the sky. One of the human desires is to fly in the sky, so some people take an airplane to achieve it through an airplane.

In conclusion, people usually go to Ulsan by using public transportation such as a bus, train, or an airplane. Also, there are some advantages each of them. Now people can go everywhere they want if they put their mind to it because of the development of transportation. It is not only fast but comfortable. Because of it, people can also meet their family, friends, boy or girlfriend like me, so it has now become an essential part of life.

Similar or Different Alleys

What do you think Seoul looked like 30 years ago? If you look at photographs taken by Kim Ki-chan, you will know how Seoul was like. The photographer Kim Ki-chan had taken photos of alleys in Seoul since 1980's. Here are two black-and-white photographs, which do not have the title. He only marked where and when he took them. In both photographs, the main center of interest is a child (or children), and there is a dog. However, each photo portrays different feelings of alleys in Seoul.

In the first photograph, there are five children almost in a line. They look close friends. They attach a long black tape to their and dog's eyebrows. They are making a wry face, which creates a humorous atmosphere. In the center, the tallest child is holding a baseball bat. Children may have been playing baseball before they were photographed. One boy is holding a dog, which is staring into space blankly. The dog might think that it does not care whatever children do to itself. What makes this photograph special is that children are not moving, but it does not seem quite. Because of children's funny facial expression, the mood of the picture is fun and enjoyable.

The center of focus in the second photograph is a little girl in the foreground. She is walking up the alley. In the background, there are a baby and an old woman. However, they are not seen well because they are just out of focus. Therefore, it seems as if a little girl is the only person in the alley. She looks isolated and lonely. However, there is something strange. The sense of solitude is not the only feeling this photograph gives. It also creates a sense of warmth and peace. The reason is because a little girl is carrying a spotted dog on her back. She may think of the dog as her best friend or her little brother.

The theme of both photographs is a child or children in an alley. However, they give different feelings. In the first photograph, five boys and one dog are the main center of focus. The impression of the first picture is communicated through children's facial expressions. It seems humorous and enjoyable. On the other hand, in the second photograph, the way a little girl is positioned is important. She is only with a dog in the foreground. This composition produces the impression such as loneliness and deep friendship.

Good Transportation, Good Trade

About 1200 years ago, people crossed the silk road, which is about 600km, from Asia to Europe and they walked or rode camels for several months or a year to do the foreign trade. This kind of story is just unimaginable as we live in a world we can go that way at only 10 hours. Nowaday, we can use various kinds of transportations such as ships, planes and rails when engaging in trade and each of them has their own advantages.

Firstly, ships are the most frequently used transportation for trade. They account for 70~80 percent for a means of the trade transportation and they are largely used for foreign trading. Not only are they relatively cheap but they are also useful when sending freight in bulk at least 40~50kg to tons of cargo at once. Trading companies use ships when they export or import crude oil, gas, iron ore, clothes, crops, cars, etc.

Another means of carrying goods is a plane in the trade business and it takes 20~30 percent. The biggest merit of the plane is speed as it is the fastest transportation in existence. It is usually used when transporting products which are small in volume and have high value such as semi-conductors or parts of electronics since the airfare is very expensive.

Lastly, people use freight rails when they carry products and they are good for domestic trading. They are cheaper than ships or planes and safe because they are not affected by the weather or environment so much. They can also carry freight in bulk and are almost free from the risk of accident.

There are three main means of transportation for trade business ; ships, planes and rails. Ships are relatively economical and carry things in bulk. Planes are really fast and good for sending products urgently. In addition, rails cost least and are realiable as we can use them regardless of the weather or the environment.

What nutrients does your food have?

People eat various foods everyday. But do you know what nutrients the foods have? There are six main types of nutrients used to maintain body health, which are water, protein, fat, inorganic salts, vitamin and carbohydrate. Among them, water, fat and inorganic salts are common. Most foods fully contain them. You just need to control the amount of them not to overeat. But protein, vitamin and carbohydrate is limited to certain foods, although they are essential nutrients. So we have to consider our diet to consume certain foods which contain protein, vitamin or carbohydrate.

First, I will introduce why our body needs to consume protein and what foods contain protein. Our body consists of a large number of organs such as intestine, teeth, lung, muscle and so on. Almost all of them are made up of protein. Like this, protein is an essential nutrient in making our body. Then, how can we consume it? We make an effort to eat certain foods containing protein. For example, a beef tenderloin, a pork neck, a chicken breast have relatively the high amount of protein. Especially, a chicken breast per 100g contains about 23g of protein.

Second, I inform you about vitamin. You don't have to consume vitamin too much. But if your diet is deficient in vitamin, you will suffer a vitamin deficiency disease. For example, lack of vitamin A makes you suffer night blindness; lack of B does beriberi; lack of C does scurvy; lack of D does rickets. Let me introduce what foods has what kinds of vitamin. Potatoes, sweet potatoes and carot have enough vitamin A. Milk, cheese, liver and egg contain enough vitamin B. Tomato, orange, kiwi and apple contain vitamin C. Mushrooms, mackerel and other fishes have vitamin D.

Last, you have to be careful to consume carbohydrate at an appropriate time. When you eat it too much at a time, leftovers turn into fat which can induce obesity. If you don't eat enough amount, your body may damage itself to produce energy. So you need to keep carbohydrate consumed on time. I will inform you of what foods have much carbohydrate. Beans, rice, nuts, barley, wheat, bread and other cereals consist mainly of carbohydrate.

Up to now, I introduce specifically protein, vitamin and carbohydrate. We have learned that lack of those nutritions affect our body and how we can deal with nutrition deficiency. These days in our society, products and services that promote personal well-being are all the rage. The most important element for well-being life is health. Take good care of your health!

 The Big Three environmental pollution

Hwang Yoo Jung  200904349

Intermediate English Writing I (Tue 78)

A classification essay on page 144 (first draft)

Environmental pollution, which is caused by human activities which do production, transportation, daily life and so on, is a phenomenon that harms the natural or living environment. The pollution has been deteriorated rapidly after the Industrial Revolution and is top priority that should be resolved right now. It is often said that Earth's environment is composed of the atmosphere(air), lithosphere(soil or rock) and hydrosphere(water). According to these three components of the planet, the major types of environmental pollution can be sorted into air pollution, water pollution and soil contamination.

First of all, air pollution happens when overly many pollutants, which can harm humans or other living organisms, are released into the atmosphere. Common air pollutants are usually harmful gases, which are produced by industry and motor vehicles. For example, there are carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) and nitrogen oxides and so on. Serious problems caused by air pollution, are acid rain, stratospheric ozone depletion, smog, global worming etc. Actually, the atmosphere is essential to support life on the planet so, what harms it can threaten human health or life as well as the Earth's ecosystem.

The next crucial is water pollution because most of all, Earth is covered with water, amounting to 70 percent of its surface. Water pollution is caused especially when pollutants, intentionally or through spills, are discharged into water bodies like lakes, rivers, oceans and groundwater etc. Commonly discharged pollutants are wastewater from commercial and industrial waste; untreated domestic sewage; chemical contaminants like chlorine etc. In addition, water pollution is closely related to terrible sanitation problems; so, it has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases.

Another major type is soil contamination. It happens when chemicals are released intentionally, or by spill or underground leakage, into the natural soil environment. Common soil contaminants are hydrocarbons, heavy metals, MTBE, herbicides, pesticides and chlorinated hydrocarbons etc. Soil contamination is serious in that it is the source of food or nutrition for almost all living beings on earth. Furthermore, it can destroy the entire ecosystem when pollutants mixed in the soil enter the food chain and spread around the planet. Soil pollution can also threaten the health of human or other living organism so, it should be always checked.

Environmental pollution is divided into air, water and soil pollution according to the sphere which pollutants is introduced to. Any type of environmental pollution can harm the overall ecosystem because almost all parts composing Earth's environment is closely connected. However, recovering the destroyed environment is extremely difficult because it is time consuming and expensive, requiring extensive knowledge and skills. Thus, we should make arduous efforts to protect our environment.

What is your Travel Type?

Truman left his village for Fiji to meet his ex-girlfriend in "The Truman Show (1998)". In "Home Alone2 (1992)", Kevin took the wrong airplane and arrived in New York. And Funny things which he has never done before happened to him there. Like what Truman and Kevin experienced, traveling during vacation can be a good chance for you to have special memories in your life. First of all, you should think about what type of trip you prefer before leaving on a trip. There are several types of vacation trip according to the purpose for the trip.

The fist type of trip is involved in someone who wants to take a rest. Do you think that the reason for a trip is to relax with a cup of coffee and music? If you do, you are of this type. You may prefer staying in one place for very long to going around, and taking a look at yourself to meeting new people. You need some places which have calm and peaceful atmosphere. For example, Ko Samui, Thailand, is one of the most appropriate places to take a rest. The natural environment is preserved as it is. Therefore, visitors can enjoy clean sea which is so clear that they can see the sand on the bottom.

Another type is an adventurous trip. Some people want to go where everything is different from what they are used to. In addition, they prefer some places which most people do not visit yet or even mind visiting, because there is little information on their destination. This type of people may say, "If your feet are not perspiring, your trip is not perfect." For people who aspire to be of this type, Tibet is one of the best countries as the first to travel. It will be unforgettable memory to live with nomads, milking and shearing the sheep.

The last type is about people who hope to enjoy urban cultures. Most people of this type hope to blend in with citizens living there. Also, they are busy looking around from museums, galleries to fancy restaurants. Suppose someone of this type goes to Bangkok. She reserves Bangkok Oriental Hotel which attracts millionaires and celebrities from all over the world. After that, she goes to Bangkok National Museum to learn about the Thai royal cultures. At night, she enjoys having a cocktail, admiring the scenery of Chao Phraya River where many people go aboard a cruise to see many Thai floating houses.

There are three types of trip such as 'rest' type, 'adventure' type and 'urban culture' type. Although every types of trip can bring a refreshing and new experience, but you need to know what type you are of. This is because each type has different demerits in its own way. So find if you are 'rest', 'adventure' or 'urban culture', and you will be able to minimize weaknesses of each type of trip.

Few options decide your vacation

Vacation always makes people excited. Get out of the stuffy downtown and traveling in nature refreshes us. But Korea students can't enjoy their vacation well. They are always chased by studying and most of the time experience financial problems. So most of people can't realize their plans for vacation. In this writing, I want to talk about some options that are needed for vacation and categorize them.

First, people have to make sure their time for travel. After making promise with friends and then we can make sure the other plan. We can travel in weekdays or weekends. If we chose weekdays, most of other people have to work in that day so we can enjoy leisurely travel. Also traffic might be cool. But travel in weekdays is difficult because we have to work or study in that day like others. In some case, the vacation is cancelled because of emergency situation in school or workplace. In contrast, traveling in weekends will be good for making promise but traffic condition must be bad and so many people are in vacation spots.

Next thing is place. Korea is very small country but has many mountains and beaches. Mountain is one of the most popular places for vacation because there are many mountains near the city. It's good for short trip. But many people think beaches are better than mountains since most of them can't see beaches during their daily life. Other attractions of sea are sea breeze, wild beaches, surfing and swimming. In summer time, however beaches will be so crowded.

Last thing is transportations. Your choice about transportations can have a great effects on your financial and time plan. If you choose public transportations, you can save money and it could be faster than your own car when the traffic is terrible. But in some time people spend their time for waiting their bus or train under the sunshine and it makes people so tired. When you use your own car you will feel comfortable and calm. Though if traffic is heavy, you will spend your time on the highway.

Vacations can be tonic in our life but many people spend their money and time with more stresses. It's because they didn't plan well. As I said, If we make a good choice in many options like weekdays or weekends, mountains or beaches, public transportations or car, we can enjoy beautiful vacation without waste of time and money.

Huiyeong Kim - A five-paragraph classification essay about abilities you possess for your potential career

Intermediate English Writing 1

I Have a Dream

People have dreamed about their future from the time when they were young. Someone wants to be a doctor, designer, lawyer, writer or nurse. When I was young, I also wanted to be a doctor to cure diseases or be a president to govern Korea. Then as I get older, I always have a goal, an interpreter. Especially, I want to work for U.N. or the international conferences. Because the more I study English, the more it fascinated me. Nowadays, I am confused whether or not I can do it, but I have several abilities for an interpreter.

First of all, English will help me to be an interpreter. To interpret something, language is basically essential. After the United States became the superpower, English also became a necessary language all over the world to communicate with people in other countries. I have a great interest in English and have studied it for quite a long time, so I am now majoring in English. For these reasons, it makes me possible to get one step closer to my goal.

In fact, my first major is French, so it will also be my strong point to become an interpreter. Many countries use it as a native language or an official language because of French colonial rule in the past. For this reason, UN and international conferences also use it as an official language. Today, mostly, anyone studies and speaks well English, but the number of people who can speak French is few. Using French was to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's advantage to be elected to the post, for example.

In addition, I am good at concentrating and memorizing. During the conversation between people, an interpreter should listen carefully to what they say and memorize to interpret the contents of communications for others. Therefore, concentration and memorization are the important factors to interpret. Whenever I do something, I really focus on it. Also, if I once see or hear something, I seldom forget it, so these abilities will be advantages to be an interpreter.

In conclusion, English and French skills that I have will help me to be an interpreter. My abilities to concentrate and memorize will also be helpful. Even though I cannot speak fluently not only English but also French yet, I am still learning. As the saying goes, "No one is too old to learn." I will continuously do my best, and I believe that I will be an interpreter someday like a dream come true.

I always have a dream. Although with advancing years, my dream has become more realistic, I continue to dream. Like this, while pursuing my goals, I have become mature little by little. I have worked as an editor in the publishing companies over 10 years, and now I have a new goal to translate books. To become a faithful communicator, translators should have excellent language skills; be well informed with broad vision; and be scrupulous.

Translators are a communicator who promotes cultural interchange by means of language. So, first of all, translators should have outstanding linguistic skills, especially, reading and writing skills. In childhood, I loved reading books and would win the prize at the writing contest. While in college, I made the school magazine as an editor and reporter; after graduating, I have worked as an editor in some publishing companies. Furthermore, I am majoring in English translation at a reputable college to enhance my ability.

Next, translators should have a great deal of common knowledge because they deal with various areas. However excellent language skills are, translators cannot understand a text well if they are short of common sense. Since my college, as a report and editor, I have developed a critical eye dealing with contemporary essays. Also, I have broadened my knowledge, especially editing various books. I could keep an open mind working with various writers such as a professor, a literary person, a civil activist, a scientist and so on.

Finally, translators should be careful; that is, he has to translate not only a message controlling a total text but even every sentence, every concept. I could develop these qualities, especially working in the publishing company. For example, when I encountered vague explanation while proofreading, I made sure to check them again and confirm. Also, as the marketing planner of books, I was in a habit of working step by step based on practical research and analysis.

In short, to faithfully communicate, translators should have good linguistic skills or extensive knowledge, and be thorough. Fortunately to some extent, I could develop these abilities, while have been working as a reporter and editor since my college. Now that I buckle down to English translation; I am gradually realizing my goal to become a special translator.

Born to Teach

When I was a child, I wished that I had several bodies. The reason is because there were so many things I wanted to do in the future, such as a singer-songwriter, basketball player and professional traveler. However, as I grew up, I was only interested in the film industry as my future profession. Recently, I change my future goal slightly. At first, I wanted to be a film director responsible for everything about film, but now I hope to teach college students of the Film department. I think I have several strong points for my future career.

First, I am very used to teaching. I have always tutored students as my part-time job. I have taught students some subjects such as Korean languages and English grammar. I have some know-how to make students understand in my own ways. Before I have a part-time job as a tutor, when I was in high school, many friends of mine asked me to explain the process for the math problems. Every time I taught how to solve them, my friends complimented me, saying "You have to become a teacher of professor in the future. Sometimes your explanation is easier to understand than our teachers'."

In addition, English will help me become a professor. Nowadays, many universities are looking for someone who can give lecture in foreign languages, especially English. No matter what applicants major in, English becomes almost obligation. For the present, my ability in English is not good enough to do lecturing in English. However, I think I am exposed to the best environment for studying English. If I put more energy into my major, English, I will be able to teach film in English to some extent.

Finally, I usually do not feel nervous about making presentation in front of people. This is related to my personalities. First, I am an outgoing person, so I like to meet new people. I believe that making presentation is a good opportunity to make people recognize me. This belief seems to make me feel comfortable with speaking in front of people. After presentation, I usually meet several people who come to me and say, "Do you know me? I saw you in Professor Kim's class. Your presentation was interesting." Also, I am quite optimistic. Therefore, I am always positive and confident that I will make great speech or presentation. Even though I totally mess up the presentation, I just forget about it.

When it comes to becoming a professor, I have some forte, including teaching ability, English and presentation skill. However, I do not have more than enough qualities to become a professor in "Film" department. I need more creativity to work in the art world. In order to develop creativity, I do my best to have direct and indirect experiences, such as travelling and reading lots of books respectively. I strongly believe what people say, "Knowing yourself is the best shortcut to achieve your goal." I already took a first step into a shortcut to my dream.

Things that Qualify me

All students are working so hard in the studies to get a job they want and put lots of effort to increase their abilities required. As everyone has their own asset and talent which can be useful for their potential carrier, I have my own as well; they are communication skills, foreign language skills and computer skills.

I have such an outgoing personality, which spontaneously makes me have a good communication skills, that I really enjoy meeting new people and make friends easily in a short time. This ability can lead me to build good relationships with the colleague, thus have a firm teamwork at the workplace and be swiftly responsive to the need from the company.

In addition, I have decent foreign language skills. I am quite comfortable with business English because I studied for Toeic and got 950 at the last test and I also have the grade A in Teps. Apart from English, I speak German a little as I majored in German literature and language in the former university. These skills will be beneficial for me when applying for a job.

Lastly, I have general knowledge in computer software such as MS Word, Excel and Power Point. These days, computer skills are almost necessary in this paperless world and this trend will be more intensified in the future. Since lots of paperwork is being replaced by the computer work and important meetings are done with computer screen turned on, this skill is indispensable ability to get a job.

To conclude, I have excellent communication skills, foreign language skills and computer skills. I believe these skills will be advantageous when I try to get a job and I am still trying to promote my abilities in many ways to qualify myself.

Stop the Unstoppable Growth of Fast Food

Well-Being trend can not stop 'them'. They are fast food chains. Nowadays, most of us are seeking healthy and slow food because of problems of fast food. However, strangely, the number of fast food chains has been increasing all over the world. [For example, when it comes to Japanese food service industry, the industry has slimmed down by 18% since 1997. Nevertheless, the fast food companies have always had a surplus.] Should we let these fast food chains grow? No. I think we should stop them from growing, because they have many disadvantages.

Many fast food companies invent many healthy foods with fresh ingredient, but those are as unbalanced nutritionally as ever. In recent year, People are interested in well-being food and mind eating fast food. In order to draw customers again, the fast food companies made healthy menu, such as hamburgers made from rice or chicken fried in good extra-virgin olive oil. Their effort to change their menu is good, but it is not enough. Fast foods are still high in calories and people can hardly get minerals and vitamins from them. In addition, product developers in fast food companies can not change ingredients of soft drinks which people drink with fast food.

The increasing price is another problem. Fast food, especially hamburger, is the food which children like. When I was in elementary school, I could hear the voice of my friends so many times, "Today is my birthday, so let's have a party in McDonald's after school!" However, recently, it is hard to watch children coming to fast food franchise store with their friends. In my opinion, one of the reasons children can not come is the price. Also, the price of new menu to keep up with 'well-being' trend is really high. The reason is because its ingredients are comparatively expensive, but I do not think the price is not reasonable.

In my opinion, the most serious problem of fast food chains is that they make a lot of environmental pollution. The most of fast food franchise provide delivery or take-out services. At this point, the stores usually use single-use containers. Hamburger wrappers and pizza boxes are vinyl coated paper and the tops of soda bottles are plastic. Finally, fast food staffs put all foods in the plastic bags. Only in McDonalds', more than 50 million people all over the world visit and buy hamburgers every single day. Imagine. How much disposable materials are ending up in the trash!

The growth of fast food chains should be controlled. There are so many problems that fast food chains cause, including unbalanced food, the soaring price and environmental pollution. Maybe, it is almost impossible to stop fast food companies from growing. The growth of them seems to be unstoppable. There is one of the first and most important ways to solve many problems fast food chains. The fast food companies themselves should try harder  to make positive effects of their growth than anyone else.

Voting as a Choice, Not an Obligation

Hwang Yoo Jung  200904349

Intermediate English Writing I (Tue 78)

An argumentative essay on page 114 (first draft)

Whenever election time is nearing, a stale social issue in Korea reappears. That is the very low voting rate in national elections. In fact, according to a report about national voting rate released in 2009 by International IDEA(Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance), Korea stayed in the 26th rank among the OECD's 30 members. Some people believe that this low voting rate is blocking progress in democracy. So, they suggest that the law, forcing the people to mandatorily vote, be enacted. However, I disagree with compulsory voting in that democracy should respect personal freedom and right, and abstention is obviously a way to express political stance.

Election is one of institutions to realize democracy; so, it is meaningful when it is conducted democratically. If it is obligatory for the people to vote in national elections, their political right can be infringed in the name of democratic development. It is extremely contradictory. In other words, it is nonsense that the right to vote is forced mandatorily. Democracy can really be attained, only when election itself is conducted democratically.

Abstention or refusing to vote should be respected as one way expressing personal opinion. For example, anarchism or atheism has been already accepted as ways indicating personal political or philosophical position, and same rules should be applied to voting. Namely, not to vote can be understood as intentional political unconcern. In fact, focus should be on irresponsible politicians, not on whether voting or not. In reality that even President does not keep his promises during election campaigns, how many voters are there wanting to vote?

Some people blame those who do not vote in that they give up the opportunities to change our society rightly, so run counter to democracy. High voting rate, however, does not guarantee democracy. For instance, in autocracy, elections tend to be tainted by corruption and high voting rate often becomes means to justify seizing power. Thus, the government should seek effective ways to boost it rather than compel voting. For instance, some countries in Europe introduced the proportional representation system to more exactly accept opinion of the people. In the case of US, Social media like Tweeter, Facebook or YouTube were actively used in the last presidential election.

Over 20 countries around the world are already forcing their people to vote by law, and among them, developed countries are also included. So, it is natural that compulsory voting be suggested in the country with very low voting rate like us, Korea. However, compelling voting should not be accepted in that it can infringe personal freedom and right, and abstention or refusing to vote are a way to express personal opinion. Also, especially politicians and social leaders before blaming those who do not vote, should find out ways to restore trust of the people and attract them to the polling places. That is the best policy to raise voting rate.

give up their happiness and study for getting a job. Recently many students

want to be a person who companies want because finding a job is very difficult.

Most of people become same. I'm just 2nd grades so I don't prepare for

employment yet. So I want to talk about some skills that companies want.

First thing is foreign languages. About 10 years ago English became most

important education so many people learned, but today most of Korean

go abroad for language studying or are raised in foreign countries. Nowadays

English is essential knowledge. For get a job, we have to learn more than 2

languages including English. So many students study for not only TOEIC,

TOEFL, TEPS but also many language skill tests.

Next is creativity. Many companies aim creative people so they set exam questions

for finding creative students. Recently there are many books about sample questions

from tests of huge companies. Most of job seekers analyze and memorize

those books for get a job. I wonder these questions and tests are useful for

real creative people.

Last thing is patient. Most of Korea companies have unreasonable structure.

Someone are promoted irrespective of their ability and someone get stress

because of others' jealous and envy. So patient is most important for Korean

employments. Many people leave their company because of these unreasonable

structures of Korea companies. For receiving salary, people have to ignore their

feelings and be in managements' good books.

When we can't get a job for a long time, most of people blame and despise us.

Because we have to forget about us, friends and families for get a job.

Moreover we have to earn many money for live like a decent human being,

so job became basic element of human. Most of students put getting a job

above their health, pleasure and morality. We have to do that.

I have three strengths for my future career

Everyone dreams of the day when our dreams come true. For the day, we have to improve our ability and have done so. I often estimate myself to become a more talented person. To improve myself, it's important to know what my strengths and weaknesses are. I also have three strong points; diligence, punctuality, patience.

My first ability for my career is diligence. Diligence means steady, earnest, energetic application and effort. It is said that a diligent person must make it, no matter what the situation is, how much older he get, how excellent grade in his school year. I, who am diligent, will bring success in my career and wealth to myself.

My second ability is punctuality. Dan Kennedy said that punctuality is the number one most powerful personal discipline in all the world. It was because he knew to keep appointments in time meant one's success, integrity and others' trust. Punctuality has been crucial to myself for my life. Being punctual made me respect myself, manage my time, improve my work, and have a high self-esteem.

My third ability for my future career is patience. For my dream's coming true, I have to learn many things and improve myself. Whenever we attempt to learn something new, we have to give ourselves time which is whether long or short one. It is said that the most great acquisition needs the longest time. I have a lot of perseverance, so I believe I can acquire whatever I want to learn.

Until now, I have introduced three abilities I possess for my future career. I am diligent. I keep my appointment in time. I have a lot of patience. Those abilities as well as others will make my dreams come true.

Is Free Downloading a Blessing or a Curse?

An argumentative essay on page 103 (first draft)

In May of 2000, a revolutionary Internet service, called "Soribada" was launched in Korea. This site, while offering free music files, had 20 million subscribers just after 3 years. After 11 years, however, Soribada, although it seemed to become a big business, keeps alive as a small one. What caused Soribada to fail was a free downloading problem which becomes more and more controversial. As for me, illegal downloading should be banned in that it can make musicians and producers lose big money; it can discourage their creative activities; as a result, all those things can damage the cultural life of public.

First of all, illegal downloading and sharing can cause musicians and producers to lose a lot of money. Just to write one song or release one record, considerable time and money should be spent. For instance, under the direction of producers, songwriters write a song and singers practice it many times. After that, producers actively promote and sell records to make profits. Just one click trying to illegally download, however, can undo all these efforts. According to a research conducted in 2009 by Copyright Protection Center in Korea, the number of illegal downloading was over 360,000, and the total sum of damage amounted to 180 million.

Secondly, illegal downloading can weaken the passion for creativity of musicians and producers and contract music industry as a result. Almost all creators want to get compensation for their hard work and keep working only when they get what they deserve. However, if they easily have their works stolen and if there are hardly any laws to punish such piracy, who on earth want to continue music activities? Like this, if musicians and producers are not protected as a copyright owner and furthermore they cannot earn enough money to keep up with their finances at home or the company, they could not keep going on their activities.

Meanwhile, those who download illegally often say that "sharing culture" on the Internet contributes greatly to develop music. For instance, when hardly accessible music such as records not reproduced any longer or censored songs, was shared on Soribada, users expected the musical world to be boosted by free resources. However, such resources do not have to be necessarily exchanged in free sites; we can share them as much as we like in pay sites. In fact, it's just a weak excuse to steal others' intellectual property. What is worse, the offending contents are more apt to spread by free distribution. After all, it is the public who loses opportunities to enjoy high-quality music due to this illegal system.

Nowadays Apple considerably controls music market around the world; in fact, it was never related with music industry in the past. This shows well how closely the musical world is connected with digital or Internet. Thus, it is natural that illegal downloading has appeared as a new enemy to harm the music industry. This free downloading should be banned in that it can damage music industry both creatively and financially and all those things can have negative influences on cultural life of the public. If Soribada actively had resolved the copyright problem, it now could be a successful company.

PARK JIN-KYUNG / Five paragraph argumentative essay

200904082 PARK Jin-Kyung

Should be the Right not Duty

Voter turnout is getting lower and it was 62.9% in 2007 for the latest presidential election in Korea; it is even lower in the local elections. There are about 20 countries where voting is mandatory such as Australia, Belgium, Brazil, etc. and there are some people insisting that voting should be compulsory in Korea as well. However, I think it doesn't meet the purpose of the election and actually it can have an inappropriate effect on elections.

Voting system is a means of electing a right person for the country and choosing the suitable one is the purpose. But, it is obvious that it's very hard for almost every citizen to carefully consider the candidates and examine all the election pledges of so many candidates. That is, these comparing and weighing up the policies of the candidates would be too much of a hassle to people leading a busy life.

In addition, if people who never pay attention to the politics participate in the election just to be faithful to his or her duties, his or her thoughtless choice never help elect a qualified candidate, which is the basic purpose of the voting, and it might even cause a negative effect on choosing the right one. It might be better for the citizens who are ordinarily indifferent to the politics to give up their rights.

The problem is on the people that don't exercise their rights just because they are too lazy. This attitude harms the basic meaning of the election, but I think if they really care about matters of state and have clear political opinion naturally do voting as they have strong view about the political issues. When these people's opinions gather, we can get the result reflecting the public opinion.

Joining the election shouldn't be said to be "must do" like rules and regulations in the sense that the fundamental aim for voting is electing a right person for our country. If voting becomes mandatory, people who don't care about the politics will rush their decisions and this can not only leads wrong decisions. Maybe, we need to promote awareness of taking more interest in the matters of our country first.

 Change candidates not voters

 'Election day is holiday'

Most of Koreans think like that. Election day became holiday to raise turnout of voters, but many people take the rest or go vacation in voting day. People said voting should be mandatory because of low vote-rates phenomenon but others opposed. Mandatory of voting have to be thought seriously.

Why people opposed to compulsory voting? Vote is not duty but right. In Korea constitution there are some laws about right of vote. Besides there are nothing about duty of vote. Many people who disagree with vote mandatory say 'It is excessive interfere of government.'

Of course vote mandatory is good way for raising amount of vote rates. But although they make more people vote, it doesn't mean that people want to vote. Vote is most important and effective way to participate in politics of country especially in democracy nations. Forcing the vote to people is wrong way for democracy. It can harm the meanings of democracy.

One of most important opinions about low vote-rates is hopeless. People don't expect about better world or good politicians. Many politicians did lot of bad things and made people disappointed so people think like 'Politicians are same'. Korea government lost people's faith. If someone want to raise vote-rates, they have to improve politicians' images and behaviors.

Something that make people move is not force but mind. Before they force something to citizens, they have to think about our mind and thinking. They should change themselves not the rules.
